DIOCESE/State Watch

San Diego CA: The archdiocese of San Diego is paying nearly $200 million to settle sexual abuse cases, per an announcement that came late Friday afternoon, Sept. 7. Union Tribune coverage notes that “$198.1 million will be paid to 144 abuse victims whose allegations date from 1938 to 1993. The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego also will release records of perpetrators. The payments: $107 million from the San Diego diocese. Catholic Mutual, the main insurance carrier, will pay $76 million. The San Bernardino diocese, which was once part of the San Diego diocese, will pay $15 million. The awards: Average payout will be $1.38 million per person for lawsuits filed in 2003.”

The Los Angeles settlement has triggered a calendar watch – California law has a built-in delay for settlement documents. All parties to the agreement must review and sign off on all the documents before their release. So despite the settlement, survivors and supporters must remain vigilant to keep the process moving.

  • The toll of the collapse in Los Angeles of pastoral responsibility and accountability in the archdiocese is just beginning to be felt by what one woman religious called “the little people.” See “Priests Pray, Sisters Pay” in the Santa Barbara Independent. Cleveland OH: The archdiocese is facing additional disgrace as a former assistant treasurer of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland is on trial, accused of taking part in widespread financial mismanagement and looting of church funds. See New York Times coverage and Catholic World News.
