Canidates for Treasurer
Scott Fraser (incumbent)
Ken Forton
Ken Forton
Unlike many of VOTF's members, I am not a life-long Catholic. I
converted to Catholicism for two main reasons: (1) the Catholic
church is deeply devoted to justice for all people, and (2) I feel
deeply connected to Jesus through the Eucharist. My love of the
church even moved me to enter the Jesuits in 1993, though ultimately
I left in 1997 to marry my wife.
Having been on the clerical side of things for four
years, I believe that the clergy sex abuse scandal was caused
by a clerical culture which effectively centers all church power
in the priests and bishops. It is now time for us to make a concerted
effort to change this culture and take responsibility for the
way the church is governed. Only lay people in a concerted, broad-based
organization like VOTF can make the necessary changes.
I believe I can best serve VOTF as its Treasurer.
I am a Boston College-trained accountant and lawyer, so I am familiar
with the systems-including internal controls-required to keep track
of VOTF's finances and give its officers the information they need
to make sound financial decisions. In addition, I hope to help raise
the institutional funds necessary to help VOTF meet its goals.
