Question for Candidate

Question:

Question from Robert Fontana, Yakima, WA" How do I understand the relationship between the national office and local affiliates and how can the national office work more effectively with affiliates to deal with specific issues?

Answer:

Dear Robert,

An important question. I see this as requiring an answer in two parts, from two different aspects:

How I understand the relationship between the national office and local affiliates?

I think it helpful to be clear on who is responsible for what. As a working journalist dealing with an unfamiliar regional organization, I would first seek out it's bylaws and any mission or identity statement.
There is a relationship set out in the VOTF bylaws on our website. A description of Board of Trustees and officer responsibilities as well as a description of affiliates are embedded in our legal bylaws.
The BOT, in collaboration with the officers, sets overall policy. Affiliates are "independent legal entities" which are expected to act within the parameters of stated mission/goals, policy.
The primary officer function is implementation of policy and facilitation of day to day VOTF operations by the President. Our Executive director works closely with our President, a member of the BOT.
In my view, the BOT, President and other elected officers, or the executive director are not the "national office" as individual persons or as individual entities. We are all connected in accomplishing the mission and goals of VOTF.

My answer from the aspect of how "national" can help affiliates effectively?:

We are all connected in a collaborative and collegial relationship and affiliates are our HEART. Yes, we need a public face articulating and implementing policy so people who ask "who are you and what do you want" have an easy answer, but affiliates are the base of this movement. Yes, I hear of a disconnect and some frustration, but know from personal experience that leaders have been doing their best in a strategic planning effort that will give the chance for roll up your sleeves reconnection...working together toward the same objective.
Voice is an important part of action to me; it has been strong in creating "Voices in Action." The officers continue a leadership and communication role in each platform. Communication is the key with affiliates as well. The affiliate leaders list is a good start, sharing ideas and methods, though staff is short. If elected, trust me, I will make myself available to listen to you and communicate your needs.
Thanks to you and your people for your hard work.
