Most Reverend Sean P. O’Malley, O.F.M., Cap.
Archbishop-Designate
Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston
2121 Commonwealth Avenue
Brighton, MA 02135-3193

Dear Bishop O’Malley:

Welcome to Boston and congratulations on your new assignment. Along with you, Voice of the Faithful humbly embraces this new opportunity for the Catholic Church in our archdiocese.

After many months of anguish over the damaged lives of survivors, over the sense of isolation among clergy, and over broken trust among laity, it is heartening to hear among your first words the hope you place in the work of “wonderful collaborators.” We share that vision and look forward to a warm and constructive working relationship with you.

Voice of the Faithful has learned much since the crisis erupted in Boston. The survivors have taught us the importance of listening in the work of healing. Both the spirit and the documents of Vatican II have taught us the rights and the responsibilities called for in a “priesthood of the laity.” Our love for Church has taught us to ensure that the pain of the past remains there.

Please know we offer you our support in “repairing” our Church. Our prayers are with you and hopes are high that Boston will model the lead for a restored Church in the 21st century. If I may borrow from the consoling words of St. Francis in addressing our daunting mission, “Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible, and suddenly you’re doing the impossible.”

We will call your office Tuesday to arrange a meeting to see how we might begin this transforming journey together.

Yours in Christ,

Steven A. Krueger
Executive Director
