Background Information Regarding This Survey

The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) survey is the result of the work of the Structural Change Working Group (SCWG). The members of this group started meeting in the fall of 2002. Their mission is “To advance meaningful and active engagement of the laity in the life of the Church in order to start to shape structural change.” It made sense to start at the parish level, since this is where our membership is most involved. Our experience with PPC’s went from highly effective ones to parishes in which they were non-existent.

In order to make decisions on where we could provide the most help to our members, it was decided that we would conduct a survey of PPC’s. Our goals are:

1. Obtain a sense of both the number and type of existing PPC's in the US
2. Obtain a sense of what the faithful think of their PPC
3. Determine the characteristics of PPC's that are judged to be working well
4. Determine the sense of ownership that parishioners have with regard to PPC's
   
   In order to:
5. Develop an action plan relating to PPC's for use by the Structural Change Working Group (SCWG).

SCWG has determined that part of our mission is to educate the Faithful about PPC's and encourage them to a) convince their pastors to form PPC's where they do not exist and 2) strengthen those that do exist. Participating in this survey is one way for you to help us achieve our goals.
