Members of Voice of the Faithful-Maine
Honored With Prestigious "Make A Difference" Award From
Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MeCASA)
Accolade Recognizes Individuals Who Advocate for
Victims and Survivors of Sexual Assault

Newton, Mass., - March 28, 2003 - Voice of the Faithful (VOTF), a group of over 25,000 mainstream Catholics formed in response to the Catholic Church's sexual abuse crisis, today announced that members of its Maine-based affiliate have been bestowed with the Make A Difference Award for their tireless efforts to assist victims of clergy sexual abuse throughout the State of Maine. MeCASA will present the award to VOTF-Maine members during a ceremony held on April 2nd, from 2 -3:30 p.m. at the Blaine House, Augusta, ME.

"Voice of the Faithful has been unyielding in their support for victims of clergy sexual abuse," said Elizabeth Ward Saxl, executive director, MeCASA. "The group's compassion and steadfast commitment has effectively raised awareness of sexual assault issues and abuse in Maine."

Despite group bannings by Bishop Gerry and denial-of-facilities tactics by Cheverus High School, a Jesuit facility located in Portland, ME, VOTF-Maine has continued to elevate the awareness of clergy sexual abuse by bringing nationally-recognized Catholic speakers to Maine. Past VOTF sponsored event speakers have included Fr. Hayes, president of LINKUP and survivor of clergy sexual abuse to discusses his journey from victim to Catholic priest and Rev. William Clark, S.J to discuss the rights and responsibilities of the laity and clergy.

"We are flattered MeCASA's board of directors have overwhelmingly selected members of VOTF-Maine to receive its prestigious Make A Difference Award, this accolade underscores the importance of our mission," said Paul Kendrick a founding member of VOTF's Maine Parish Voice affiliate. "However, VOTF still has a long road ahead to help ensure accountability within the Catholic Church.
